Breathe in deeply and fully during opening movements, as this supports the expansion of fascia.

Soft, gentle exhalations can also support the sensation that we refer to as ‘good pain’. This more often occurs during the stretching exercises described in the book or when using a foam roller. So as soon as you feel that familiar sensation of ‘good pain’ and sense that it is benefiting you, let your breath flow out very slowly and then wait for the inhalation, which will come very gently of its own accord. At first, the inhalation and exhalation movements usually merge seamlessly, with no noticeable pause in between. However, as you become more and more relaxed, you will notice that small pauses naturally occur between the exhale and the next inhale. The more you relax here, the more you will notice that initial feeling of ‘good pain’ morphing into a pleasant feeling of ‘letting go’, as the tension melts away.

As studies have shown, after just a few minutes, the gentle exhalation described here begins to calm the autonomic nervous system, which in turn increases overall relaxation and intensifies the regeneration process. Treating fascia with rolling or stretching exercises, combined with this kind of relaxed breathing, can therefore be even more effective at alleviating sleep difficulties and chronic stress than medication.
